The famous attraction of the Tatra Mountains is closed. The reason is difficult conditions
The announcement about the temporary suspension of the operation of some facilities was issued by Polskie Koleje Linowe. Very strong winds blow in the high parts of the mountains.
This is another bad news for tourists after the information about the price increase in the Tatra National Park. One of the most important attractions on the Polish side of the Tatra Mountains has been closed since yesterday (January 17). The cable car to Kasprowy Wierch was closed after PKL’s announcement regarding difficult weather conditions. Two other railways will also be temporarily closed.
The cable car to Kasprowy Wierch is closed for at least two days
“Due to weather conditions on On January 17-18, 2024, the Kasprowy Wierch main railway and the Gąsienicowa and Goryczkowa railways are closed,” we read in the announcement posted on the website of the Polish operator of passenger transport in the mountains. Further information regarding the closure was expected to appear on the website today (January 18) at 12:00. Unfortunately, it is still not certain whether the cable cars to Kasprowy Wierch will return to serving tourists tomorrow. We will monitor new information on this matter on an ongoing basis.
Conditions in the mountains are very difficult
The reason for shutting down the biggest attractions of Zakopane and the surrounding area is strong and gusty winds, reaching up to 100 kilometers per hour in the higher parts of the mountains. Thermometers show minus four degrees, which causes significant icing of the trails. Tourists must also watch out for heavy cloud cover and the possibility of an avalanche. Currently, the Tatra Mountains have a third degree (significant) avalanche danger on a five-degree scale. This is not an aura that should encourage tourists to go hiking on popular routes. In such conditions, it is definitely better to visit one of the most interesting attractions of Zakopane – the world’s largest snow maze.
