Navalny’s brother on the Russian authorities’ wanted list. Further proceedings were initiated
Oleg Navalny, the brother of the deceased Alexei, was placed on the wanted list by the Russian authorities. The prosecutor’s office initiated further proceedings against him, but it is not known on what basis.
Last Friday, February 16, Russian oppositionist Alexei Navalny died in the Polar Wolf penal colony in Siberia. He was 47 years old.
Navalny’s brother wanted by Russian authorities
Russian propaganda claims that the cause of death was “sudden cardiac arrest.” There is no doubt that Navalny was, in fact, a victim of Vladimir Putin’s revenge. Although five days have passed since the oppositionist’s death, his relatives were not only not handed over his body, but were not even allowed to see him.
It turns out that this is not the only problem that Navalny’s relatives have to face. On Tuesday, February 20, Reuters reported that Oleg Navalny, Alexei’s brother, was on the wanted list of the Russian authorities.
Oleg Navalny was also imprisoned in a penal colony
This is due to the fact that the Russian prosecutor’s office has initiated another criminal case against him. However, it is not known on what basis the proceedings were initiated, i.e. what crime Oleg Navalny was accused of.
Let us clarify that in 2014, Oleg Navalny was convicted of alleged financial abuses. He was sentenced to 3.5 years of imprisonment. Like Alexei, he served his sentence in a penal colony. He left it in 2018.
In 2021, Oleg Navalny was sentenced again, this time to a one-year suspended prison sentence, for violating restrictions related to the coronavirus pandemic. This is, of course, a pretext – Oleg Navalny was actually convicted for participating in a rally organized in defense of his brother.
Oleg Navalny is outside Russia
Later that year, Oleg Navalny left Russia and went to Cyprus. His current whereabouts remain unknown. In 2022, he was sentenced in absentia for violating probation.
In practice, this means that Oleg Navalny will not be able to attend his brother’s funeral. He would be arrested immediately after crossing Russia’s borders.
