Morawiecki about the Third Way project regarding credit holidays. “Banks will breathe a sigh of relief”
Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki criticized the bill on loan holidays authored by Trzecia Droga. The project assumes the introduction of an income criterion. – Instead of holidays for over a million households (…), only for 60,000. – commented the Prime Minister.
In mid-November, Law and Justice submitted a bill to the Sejm under which the possibility of taking advantage of credit holidays is to be extended until 2024.
Will significantly fewer people take advantage of credit holidays?
Shortly afterwards, another project on this matter was submitted, authored by the Third Way, i.e. the alliance of the Polish People’s Party and Poland 2050. In line with the demands of bankers and economists, this project assumes the introduction of an income criterion.
People whose loan repayment expenses exceed 40% could benefit from loan holidays. average monthly income in the three months before submitting the application.
In practice, this means that the number of people eligible to take advantage of credit holidays would be significantly limited. Taking into account the current parliamentary arithmetic – i.e. the fact that the Civic Coalition, PSL, PL 2050 and the Left have a majority in the Sejm – the chances of the PiS project entering into force are close to zero.
The Prime Minister on the Third Way project: Only for 60,000.
On Tuesday, December 5, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki published a recording on X (formerly Twitter) in which he compared the mentioned projects. He stated how many people would be entitled to credit holidays according to his group’s proposal and how many according to the Third Way’s proposal.
– “Nothing that has been given will be taken away.” We kept hearing this from opposition politicians during the campaign. And how are things now, after the campaign? Instead of loan holidays for over a million households from the new year, only for 60,000 and according to unclear criteria, said the head of government.
Morawiecki: Banks will breathe a sigh of relief, Poles will lose
He explained that the Third Way project is intended primarily to serve the interests of banks, which “are already recording record profits.” Let us remind you that last year you could take advantage of credit holidays regardless of your income.
– Banks (…) will breathe a sigh of relief because the opposition’s bill will reward them. Poles and Polish families will lose for this, as they have been protected by my government in a special way since the beginning of global inflation. A Polish politician must serve his country and citizens, not large corporations. He must have people’s interests at heart, not neoliberal dogmas, added Morawiecki.
