This is where the new Lech coach must start. He indicated the basic task to be performed
Lech Poznań made an important change after the end of the autumn round of the PKO Ekstraklasa. He said goodbye to John van der Brom and signed Mariusz Rumak. The new trainer worked with “Kolejorz” years ago. Now he has pointed out the biggest challenge to be met after his predecessor.
John van der Brom led Lech Poznań to the bronze medal in the Polish championship, and also advanced with the team to the quarterfinals of the European Conference League. Kolejorz performed well in the 2022/2023 season, and is still at the top this year. Despite this, a poor start to the competition and a slip-up in the LKE qualifying round resulted in the owners of the club from the capital of Greater Poland resigning from the Dutchman’s services after the autumn round.
Mariusz Rumak pointed out the biggest challenge after taking up the job at Lech
Although the former coach felt confident in his position, ultimately he will not prepare the team for the spring round. The role of emergency coach (until the end of the season) was entrusted to Mariusz Rumak. He is a well-known figure in Poznań football. Moreover, the 46-year-old can be considered a coaching alumnus of Lech, as he has worked with both juniors and seniors of the club for many years.
Rumak faces a difficult task to improve the club’s results, which are not terrible. This means that he does not have to play the role of a typical firefighter. In an interview with TVP Sport, the new coach of the Poznań team said that his biggest challenge would be to bring out the potential of the players.
– We need to use the potential of these boys. It is enormous. To a large extent, this team won the Polish championship, reached the quarterfinals of the European Conference League, and played fantastic matches. I admired them, being close to the team. My task is to bring out this potential, especially in the organization of the game. We want to take the initiative, concede significantly fewer goals – because Kolejorz cannot have that many losses – and take advantage of our situations. Team cohesion and tactical organization are the biggest challenges today, said Rumak.
Lech Poznań fights in the PKO Ekstraklasa
The new coach will have a full winter preparation period to familiarize himself with the team. After 19 PKO Ekstraklasa matches, Lech is in third place, eight points behind Śląsk Wrocław.
