The world's top tennis players unite against the WTA. Iga Świątek with a separate letter

The organization of the WTA Finals in Cancun leaves much to be desired. The best players in the world complained about poor and late preparation of the court for play. Now the joint letter of the players has come to light. They are fed up with the incomprehensible WTA policy.

The world’s top tennis players compete in Cancun to win the WTA Finals. Next to the Grand Slams, it is the most prestigious event in the tennis players’ calendar. Although the event should theoretically be at a high organizational level, players and the media have been reporting for several days about further problems related to, among others, the preparation of the court.

The world’s best tennis players unite against the WTA

On the occasion of the ongoing tournament, “The Athletic” reported on the letter that 21 top tennis players sent to the WTA. The signatories include Aryna Sabalenka, Jelena Rybakina, Marketa Vondrousova and Ons Jabeur. They demand an increase in salaries, improved conditions during tournaments, care for the children of players, as well as the presence of representatives of the tennis players’ association on the WTA Council. The federation offered the best players a meeting before the start of the event in Cancun.

However, during the match there was an unexpected WTA counterattack. According to reports from The Athletic, Steve Simon, the head of the organization, suggested that nervous players tell the media that they are happy to play in the WTA Finals “because it is a prestigious event” and that they feel proud of the WTA’s actions to improve conditions. .

Some of the players were supposed to leave the match before it ended. Iga Świątek, who sent her own separate letter, was not among the signatories of the letter. Paula Wolecka, Świątek’s spokeswoman, informed “The Athletic”: “Iga expresses her willingness to discuss with the WTA, but at this point she wants to focus on her performance, and her task is to play her best in demanding conditions.”

Iga Światek fights separately

As we can read in a statement sent to “Przegląd Sportowy” journalists, Iga Świątek supported some of the demands and observations of other players in the letter. “It seems that top tennis players present a common position on key issues and want changes. Iga wants the best possible conditions to promote tennis around the world, provide fans with entertainment through this sport and develop the positive impact that tennis can have on reality and fans. What is crucial is that Iga is determined to hold internal talks with the organization, so she leaves more detailed issues to herself at this point,” we can read.

Iga Świątek started the tournament in Cancun with a 7-6, 6-0 victory over Marketa Vondrousova. In the next match he will most likely face Coco Gauff.
