Iga Świątek delivered bad news. She made an important decision
Iga Świątek followed the example of several other tennis players and withdrew from the WTA Guadalajara tournament. In a statement published on social media, she explained what prompted her to do so.
The last few weeks have been very difficult for Iga Świątek. The Pole lost in the 1/8 finals of the US Open, which meant that she lost the WTA ranking leader to Aryna Sabalenka after 75 weeks. If the Raszyn player wants to be the first racket in the world again, she must accumulate points and count on the Belarusian’s stumble.
Iga Świątek’s important decision. The tennis player withdrew from the tournament
The closest tournament in which Iga Świątek could do this was Abierto Zapopan played on hard courts in Guadalajara, Mexico. Ultimately, the world’s number two racket made an important decision regarding this tournament.
“Hi! Unfortunately, I have to withdraw from the tournament in Guadalajara due to the tight calendar and its changes. I have to listen to my body and since the season is very intense – our priority as a team is to play it to the end in good health and plan my starts wisely so as not to risk injury. I’m sorry, but I’m sure the tournament will be great. See you in Tokyo,” wrote Iga Świątek on Twitter.
When will Iga Świątek return to the court?
Fans will be able to watch Iga Świątek only during the Pan Pacific Open, a tournament taking place on hard courts in Tokyo, Japan. The competition is at the WTA 500 level and is scheduled from September 25 to October 1. Some time ago, the organizers of the competition announced the participation of a Polish woman.
“Good news for Toray Pan Pacific Open fans. Iga Świątek announces her participation in the tournament in 2023,” it was written some time ago in a message on social media.
Although Iga Świątek will play at this tournament for the first time, she does not have good memories of tennis in Tokyo. In 2021, the Raszyn player was eliminated in the second round of the singles tournament of the Olympic Games against Paula Badosa. The cameras then captured the cries of our compatriot.
