Gdańsk’s biggest attraction will return in spring. Tourists had been waiting for it for 3 years
The renovation of the 15th-century monument is coming to an end. The interior of the facility has changed, and tourists will be able to see it in May.
The old port crane in Gdańsk will be one of the numerous attractions that will reopen in 2024. According to the National Maritime Museum, the renovation is scheduled to be completed on April 30, 2024 – the first tourists should enter the new exhibition area in late spring. For the last three years, the facility could only be photographed from the outside.
The renovation of the Crane is coming to an end
“The renovation of the iconic Gdańsk monument, the largest since its reconstruction after the destruction caused during World War II, will soon come to an end,” we read in a post published on Facebook by the National Maritime Museum in Gdańsk. The monument has been undergoing renovation since 2020, and for three years it has been completely closed to visitors, who are left to take photos of its facade. Thanks to the renovation worth PLN 18 million (PLN 13 million was obtained from the EEA fund thanks to funding from Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein), it was possible to restore the 15th-century Crane Gate to its full glory. Renovated, among others: the roof was covered with new ceramic tiles. The wooden part of the crane has also been changed, and today it delights with its light brown, fresh color – the same as the building was covered with centuries ago. “During the renovation of the southern Crane Tower, the 17th-century sundial was carefully restored; its bright dial against the background of the brick wall can be seen in the highest part of the façade,” we read.
The museum will open in spring
The modernization of the Crane is scheduled to be completed on April 30, 2024 – the first tourists should see the interior in its full glory in May. The Crane Gate, one of the most popular monuments in the Tricity, is also a branch of the National Maritime Museum in Gdańsk. Thanks to the renovation, residents and visitors will be able to visit a completely new permanent exhibition, where they will feel like they are in the 17th century, during the golden era of Gdańsk. A modern crane and the solutions used inside it (new installations, fire systems and structures that meet technical standards) will enable safe and more interesting sightseeing. The museum authorities promise that the latest exhibition will be much more innovative than the previous one.
