The issue of Mejza's asset declarations returns. A surprising decision of the Chancellery of the Sejm
The director general of the office of the Speaker of the Sejm, Szymon Hołownia, does not want to provide the prosecutor's office with the original documents regarding Łukasz Mejza. The investigation concerns possible irregularities in the declaration of assets of a PiS MP.
The case reported by Wirtualna Polska concerns the declaration of assets of MP Łukasz Mejza submitted at the beginning of the current term of office of the Sejm, i.e. in the autumn of last year. Łukasz Mejza, in his declaration of assets submitted at the beginning of the new term of office, did not inform about the property in Zielona Góra worth PLN 500,000. an apartment of 59 square meters, which he mentioned in the declarations from previous years. According to the entry in the land and mortgage register, the apartment in December 2023 still belonged to the MP.
Investigation into Łukasz Mejza's statements
In December, the prosecutor's office initiated an investigation into this case. After it was publicized, as reported by Wirtualna Polska, a politician associated with Law and Justice sent a document supplementing the declaration to the secretariat of the Speaker of the Sejm, in which he allegedly wrote: “Correction to the declaration of assets (…) in point III, point 2. the following should also be added: apartment with an area of 59 m2 (…)”.
After publishing the article, journalists received an additional anonymous message suggesting that the MP was the only one in the estate who had adapted a room in the attic, which he did not include in his financial declaration. This was confirmed in March by the police who searched the parliamentarian's apartment in this case.
As established by Wirtualna Polska journalists, Mejza purchased the apartment in 2018 from the company PBS Szymanowscy i Wspólnicy. The MP and Daniel Szymanowski, one of the company's partners, had business interests, and Szymanowski himself was Mejza's partner at Vinci Sport. Citing the liquidator of the company PBS Szymanowscy i Wspólnicy, the portal informs that the above-mentioned company paid PLN 50,000 for the finishing of Mejza's apartment. PLN and gave him a parking space worth PLN 10,000 for one zloty. zloty. The MP did not include any of these benefits in his asset declarations.
Hołownia's collaborator does not want to hand over the documents to the prosecutor's office
According to Wirtualna Polska, investigators asked the Chancellery of the Sejm for the original documents regarding MP Mejza, including the above-mentioned handwritten correction. The prosecutor's office wants to check whether the letter was not backdated and compare it with documents from previous years. Ewa Antonowicz, spokesman for the District Prosecutor's Office in Zielona Góra, emphasizes that obtaining these documents in the original is necessary.
However, as journalists learned from the prosecutor's office, the Chancellery of the Sejm refused to release the original documents, issuing certified copies. In the case, the prosecutor's office exchanged letters with Stanisław Zazdrowiemski, general director in charge of the office of the Speaker of the Sejm, Szymon Hołownia. The office's representative filed a complaint at the prosecutor's request. As spokeswoman Antonowicz told Wirtualna Polska, the Sejm is afraid that the original documents may be lost or damaged. The complaint will be considered by the District Court in Zielona Góra.
In an interview with Wirtualna Polska, Zazdrowiemski stated that the prosecutor's decision did not provide sufficient arguments for the release of the original documents. He allegedly emphasized several times that the prosecutor did not write why he needed Mejza's statements. At the same time, he assures that such action was in accordance with the instructions of Sejm lawyers, and if the court dismisses the complaint of the Sejm Chancellery, the original documents will be released. He also adds that the case has no political overtones.
However, the prosecutor's office assures that other aspects of the case are still being investigated and, despite the dispute with the Chancellery of the Sejm, “intensive procedural activities are ongoing.”
