Stomach cramps as a disease symptom

Painful and severe stomach cramps can have many different causes and indicate the development of various diseases in the digestive system. The most frequently mentioned include:

  • stomach ulcer disease,

  • irritable bowel syndrome,

  • food poisoning,

  • gastroesophageal reflux disease (regurgitation of food from the stomach into the esophagus),

  • inflammation of the stomach, duodenum or pancreas,

  • stomach cancer,

  • gastrointestinal obstruction.

However, it is worth paying attention to the fact that stomach cramps may indicate not only pathological processes taking place in the digestive tract. They may also indicate health problems not directly related to the digestive system. This includes, among other things, neurosis, a disorder involving the experience of very strong anxiety and mental suffering that make it difficult, or sometimes even impossible, for a person to function in everyday life. Stomach cramps also often occur in the course of a heart attack or inflammation of the female genital tract. However, you should not make any diagnoses on your own. If you notice any disturbing symptoms, you should consult your primary care physician.

How to deal with stomach cramps?

It all depends on the cause of the problem. If stomach cramps appear, for example, after a large meal, infusions of peppermint, chamomile or dandelion may help. However, if the symptoms often recur or appear without an obvious cause, you should consult a doctor and implement specialized treatment.
