Local government elections are elections to local government units, during which we will elect representatives of local authorities for the next 5 years. They will take place in spring 2024.
When will the local government elections take place?
Local government elections will be held on April 7, 2024. Polling stations will be open from 7:00 to 21:00. This decision was made by Prime Minister Donald Tusk. The Prime Minister has already submitted the appropriate draft regulation to the National Electoral Commission.
“The Prime Minister, after seeking the opinion of the National Electoral Commission, sets, by way of a regulation, the election date (…) and specifies the days on which the deadlines for carrying out electoral activities provided for in the Code (electoral calendar) expire” – reads Art. 371 § 2 of the Electoral Code.
The regulation on the conduct of local government elections was issued pursuant to Art. 371 § 2 and art. 474 § 1 of the Act of January 5, 2011, Electoral Code. The second document on which it will be based is Art. 7 section 1 and 2 of the Act of March 15, 2002 on the structure of the capital city of Warsaw.
How many years are local elections held?
In the local elections, we will elect commune heads, mayors, city presidents and councilors of communes, counties and voivodeships. They will serve a 5-year term of office. Until 2018, the terms of office of local government bodies were 4 years.
What are local government elections?
All Poles entitled to vote can vote in local government elections: over 18 years of age, residing in a given commune, district or city, having the right to vote. The elections are equal, universal and secret.
