The volleyball players of PGE Skra Bełchatów took a distant 12th place last season in PlusLiga. Bełchatów, who got used to fighting for medals, had to face huge problems. The secret was lifted by former club coach Joel Banks.

The new season of PlusLiga starts in autumn. Until then, a lot will certainly happen, whether on the field of representation or in off-field topics in the context of volleyball clubs. Joel Banks decided to strongly heat up the atmosphere regarding the previous campaign in Bełchatów. The one that failed miserably.

In the new games, the club from Bełchatów will play under the name PGE GiEK Skra. However, regardless of what naming will function in the case of such a distinguished brand, one cannot be indifferent to the words of the club’s ex-coach.

Banks was one of the “victims” of the very poor results of the Bełchatów team in the previous season. The British parted ways on the last day of January 2023. His place was eventually taken by Andrea Gardini, who has remained at the club until now, signing a contract for the 2023/24 season. The Briton became the trainer of the Berlin Recycling Volleys, additionally serving as (since 2019) the coach of the Finnish team.

On the pages of the RBB24.de portal, Banks made some strong statements about his former employer from PlusLiga.

“Unfortunately, my club was a big mess. I knew some things when I came to Bełchatów. Others only became clear once I was inside (…) I was disappointed that the season ended early for me. But at the same time, I was also relieved to be leaving this very toxic environment.

It seems that the British hit the most difficult moment in the modern history of the Bełchatów club. Finally, Konrad Piechocki said goodbye to Skra after years of being the boss. His son, Kacper Piechocki, who for years was the first libero of the club from Bełchatów, also said goodbye.

With a new name, authorities and line-up, Bełchatów will certainly want to erase the stain from the previous season. There were some interesting, well-known names in the team. Headed by former representatives of Poland: Mateusz Mika, Łukasz Wiśniewski and Dawid Konarski.
