At least 21 people died in a bus accident in Venice. It is known that tourists from Ukraine are among the victims.

The accident occurred on Tuesday, October 3, on the mainland, about 9 km from the old town of Venice. A bus carrying tourists fell off an elevated street in Mesrte. The travelers were heading to a campsite in the commune of Marghera. A dramatic rescue operation continued for many hours during the night. – People started burning – reported Mauro Luongo, commander of the Venetian fire brigade. – We saw a terrible sight. It took about an hour to recover some of the bodies, he reported.

At least 21 people died and 15 were injured in the accident. The dead include two children: a several-month-old baby and a 12-year-old girl. Four people are in a serious condition and are in the intensive care unit. The injured were transported to five hospitals in the Venice area. Not all victims have been identified yet. It is known that among the injured are tourists from Ukraine, Germany, Croatia, Austria and France. Spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Oleg Nikolenko, announced that five Ukrainian citizens were killed and three were injured in the accident.

For now, local authorities do not want to talk about the causes of the tragedy. The governor of the Venice region, Luca Zaia, told state television RAI that it was not known why the accident occurred. – It’s hard to understand how this tragedy happened. The bus was new and electric, and this street was not particularly problematic, he added. The media speculates that the driver’s illness may have contributed to the accident. A man from Italy died in an accident.

Mayor of Venice: Apocalyptic scene

Italian portals report that the bus fell from a height of several meters onto the railway tracks and then burst into flames. – I express my deepest condolences, both on my behalf and on behalf of the entire government. My thoughts are with the victims, their families and friends. I am in close contact with Mayor Luigi Brugnaro and Minister Matteo Piantedosi (Minister of Interior – editor’s note) to follow information about this tragedy, said Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, quoted by Rai.

“It’s an apocalyptic scene. I have no words,” commented the mayor of Venice, Luigi Brugnaro, on social media. Via X (formerly Twitter), he added that he was declaring mourning in Venice to honor the memory of the victims.
