Andrzej Duda's New Year's message. Kwaśniewski: The president is inclined to play

According to former president Aleksander Kwaśniewski, Andrzej Duda’s New Year’s address may be an expression of the fight for leadership on the right, and the current attitude of the head of state “does not bode well for coabitation.”

On the occasion of the New Year, President Andrzej Duda delivered a New Year’s message. He referred to, among others, to changes in public media.

– We are dealing with a new situation in Polish politics. The president and the government are from different political camps. This is normal in a democracy. But in a democracy, the Constitution, the rule of law and good political customs must be respected, he began. The head of state added that “for the first time in free Poland after 1989, there was an attempt to take over public media by force.”

Kwaśniewski on Duda’s words: He must present himself well to PiS voters

Andrzej Duda’s New Year’s message was commented on by former president Aleksander Kwaśniewski.

– I have the impression that he tends to play a very political game. I think that his entourage tells him that Jarosław Kaczyński’s time is coming to an end and he has to fight for leadership on the right, and I understand that he wants to take up this challenge, and therefore he has to show his toughness, he has to show himself well towards PiS voters – he said in the “Guest of Events” program on Polsat News.

The former president said that “this does not bode well for coabitation.”

– In my opinion, this will accumulate tensions, I would rather suggest more conversation, more dialogue. After the New Year’s address, I have the impression that Andrzej Duda is heading towards making an effort to take part in the fight for leadership on the right after Jarosław Kaczyński – he emphasized.

Kwaśniewski added that Andrzej Duda is at a difficult moment in his political path, and 10 years of presidency is a long time. – He may be considering acting in an international environment, on the border of politics, or just as his advisers are pushing him to do – to fight for the succession in the party – he speculated.
