Andrzej Duda reacted to Russia's move. He signed an important bill
Poland suspends the application of the Conventional Armed Forces Treaty. The act on this matter was signed by Andrzej Duda.
Andrzej Duda signed the law suspending the validity of the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe, signed in Paris on November 19, 1990. The president's decision means consent to changing the scope of the treaty. Poland will formally remain a party to the agreement, but will not be obliged to implement its provisions. The suspension is to be made for an indefinite period.
Andrzej Duda reacted to Russia's move
The signature of the head of state is the result of the step taken by the Russians. On November 7, 2023, the treaty ceased to apply to Russia, which denounced it. On the same day, NATO member states made a unanimous decision to suspend the treaty. In total, 29 countries are parties to the treaty, in addition to most NATO member states, also Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Moldova and Ukraine.
As we read in the information from the Chancellery of the President, “the aim of the treaty was to reduce the existing conventional offensive weapons possessed by NATO member states and former Warsaw Pact countries at the time of its conclusion, and then to maintain it at a specified level.”
What is the treaty about?
“The conclusion of the pact was dictated by the desire to establish a safe and stable balance of conventional armed forces in Europe and to eliminate the ability to launch a surprise attack and launch large-scale offensive operations in Europe,” it added.
The commitments concern five categories of conventional armed forces: battle tanks, armored combat vehicles, artillery, combat aircraft and attack helicopters. It specifies the maximum allowable ceiling for the weapons possessed by the states parties, it was explained.
