An express path for Ukraine to join the EU? These words will put an end to speculation
Will Ukraine join the EU using a simplified path? Thierry Breton, Community Commissioner for the Internal Market, spoke on the matter.
The European Union will not simplify the procedure for Ukraine’s accession to the EU, even if Kiev agrees to negotiate the conditions for ending the war with Russia, The Moscow Times reported, citing the words of Thierry Breton, EU Commissioner for the Internal Market.
– We will do everything to help Ukraine fulfill all its obligations as quickly as possible, but of course without skipping any steps, said the French politician. Thierry Breton emphasized that the path to joining the community is a “long process”.
Ukraine in the EU? “We are all an integral part of the European community”
Ukraine applied for membership in the European Union just a few days after Russia launched full-scale aggression and soldiers under Vladimir Putin’s command moved against Kiev.
“Ukrainians have long proven that we are all an integral part of the European community. It’s time to put it down on paper. Ukraine is applying for membership under a special procedure. We are grateful to our partners for their support and quick decisions,” the Prime Minister of Ukraine wrote in a statement. A few months later, in June 2022, Ukraine was granted the status of a candidate country.
Ursula von der Leyen on “a new beginning for the Union”
At the beginning of 2023, the President of the European Commission visited the country attacked by Russia. – The day Ukraine received candidate status was a new beginning for Ukraine, it was also a new beginning for the Union, said Ursula von der Leyen.
Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized that “Ukraine and the European Union are no longer separate entities of European life.” – Our values are common. Our fate is common. Our enemy is common. Our defense is common. And that is why our life is united, said the President of Ukraine.
