What next with the construction of the Intel factory near Wrocław? Kosiniak-Kamysz: We are changing the investment reality for the better
The topic of building an Intel factory near Wrocław, announced in the summer by Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki and the company’s president, is returning. The Polish government has still not completed the formalities.
In June 2023, the then Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki and the president of Intel, Pat Gelsinger, convened a press conference at which they announced the construction of a new company factory in Poland.
Foreign investments in Poland. What about the Intel factory?
– The change of government in Poland changed the investment reality for the better. Restoring the rule of law, creating better conditions, re-establishing contacts, such as the very important visit of Minister Sikorski and talks with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Germany, where he raised issues that have not yet been discussed at such a high level, i.e. compensation for war losses suffered by Poland . We are returning to being the main player in the European Union, we are returning to encouraging investments in Poland – said Deputy Prime Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz at the conference after the Council of Ministers.
– Let me remind you that our predecessors gave us a government and an economy with one of the lowest investment rates in Europe. It was below 17 percent. There was very little foreign investment because the certainty of pursuing one’s claims before the justice system was zero. We bring it back – added.
Intel’s new investment in Wrocław
During the press conference of Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki with the president of Intel, Pat Gelsinger, which took place on June 16, 2023, the company announced the decision to build a key semiconductor integration and testing plant for the company. The facility will be built near Wrocław, and the total investment value will be USD 4.6 billion, i.e. approximately PLN 18.7 billion.
The plant will create as many as 2,000 jobs at Intel itself, not counting thousands of additional positions with external suppliers and several thousand positions related to the construction of an advanced building.
The facility won’t exactly be a factory, but it will become a key part of Intel’s infrastructure across Europe. Produced in Ireland and in a plant planned in Magdeburg, Germany, the so-called silicon wafers will arrive in Wrocław. On site, they will be cut into individual units, tested and integrated into the final product. They will be shipped from the Polish plant to end customers.
Intel emphasized that the design and planned investment phase will begin “immediately”, and construction itself will start immediately after receiving the green light from the authorities. European Union. The facility is to be crucial for the entire Community, which wants to significantly improve and shorten semiconductor supply chains.
