IBM bought the Linux manufacturer. The record acquisition cost $34 billion
A record-breaking acquisition on the American IT market was finalized. The IT giant IBM bought Red Hat, the manufacturer of the Linux system, for $34 billion. The takeover was approved by the American antitrust institution and the European Commission.
IBM has made the largest acquisition in its more than 100-year history. The IT giant has completed the purchase of Red Hat, the manufacturer of the Linux operating system. The companies agreed on the acquisition in October 2018 for $34 billion. The finalization of the agreement was postponed due to the need to obtain approvals from the American antitrust institution and the European Commission.
Cloud computing
Red Hat became famous for producing the Linux operating system, which is the main competitor to the most popular Windows from Microsoft. The system also stands out because it is based on open source methodology, which allows users to interfere with its code.
However, IBM acquired Red Hat primarily with the development of cloud technologies in mind. The companies said they intend to create a next-generation hybrid multi-cloud platform. It will be connected to Linux by using an open source model.
Despite the acquisition, Red Hat will retain its name, visual identification and product names. It will operate as a separate entity within IBM.
