The port of Gdańsk has transshipped by 40% in 2022. more goods than in the previous year – according to Eurostat data. This is the largest increase among all European ports.

Data from the EU statistical office show that last year the port of Gdansk transhipped by 40%. more goods than a year earlier. In 2021, it was 45 million tons of cargo, while last year it was 63.1 million tons. This is the largest increase among all European ports.

Gdańsk was in the EU top 10, ahead of, among others, Barcelona (57.4 million tons) and Bremerhaven (42.7 million tons). Its result was also close to Marseille (66.9 million tons).

There are many indications that the results for this year will be even better. During the first half of 2023, 41.2 million tons of goods were transhipped at the Port of Gdansk. This is 36 percent more than in the same period last year. – It was a very good half-year. We can already say that we will break the transhipment record set in 2022. Last year, the Port of Gdansk was ranked 13th in Europe, and we are already ranked 8th – commented Łukasz Malinowski, president of the Port of Gdansk, quoted by gdansk.pl.

During six months of this year, a total of 1,832 merchant ships called at Gdańsk (average GT 24,585). This is 125 units more than in the first half of 2022 (then the average GT was 20,394).

Eurostat data indicate that the total gross weight of maritime cargo transhipped in all EU ports last year was approximately 3.48 billion tonnes, which means an increase of 0.8%. compared to 2021 (3.45 billion tons).

Rotterdam at the forefront

Data from the EU statistical office show that the three largest ports in Europe are Rotterdam in the Netherlands (427 million tonnes), Antwerp-Bruges in Belgium (254 million) and Hamburg in Germany (103 million). They are all located on the North Sea coast.
