The head of the Ukrainian Ministry of Agriculture resigned. There is a huge scandal in the background

Minister Mykola Solski resigned from office. The politician is suspected of “appropriating” hundreds of lands of enormous value.

According to journalists from Ukrainska Pravda, these are plots worth a total of UAH 500 million – that is, nearly PLN 51 million.

Solski is waiting for the decisions of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine

The newspaper describes that Solski – in the past, among others chairman of the Agrarian Committee of the Verkhovna Rada, as well as the minister of agricultural policy – allegedly “appropriated” agricultural land worth UAH 291 million (over PLN 29.3 million) years ago. He allegedly also intended to acquire other lands – worth another UAH 190 (PLN 19.3 million).

Solski commented on the notification of a suspected crime that he received from the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine, saying that the services were concerned about events that allegedly took place between 2017 and 2018, to which he did not admit. As he emphasized, he was working as a lawyer at that time, not as the head of the ministry.

The prosecutor's office is planning to request arrest for the minister, which he will be able to avoid only if he pays a bail of UAH 200 million (approx. PLN 20 million). The court will announce its decision regarding Solski on Friday, April 26.

1,250 plots

Ruslan Stefanchuk also informed about the whole matter via social media. He said that the parliament, of which he is the chairman, will make a decision on the resignation request during “one of the next plenary sessions.” Solski, on the other hand, intends to act in accordance with the decision of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine – as he announced on his website. If his resignation is accepted, he will step down from office, if not, he intends to continue working.

A few days ago, NABU informed the public that the properties include approximately 1,250 plots (their total area would be nearly 2.5 thousand hectares). As added, this is part of the land from the Sumy Oblast (north-eastern part of Ukraine), which in the past belonged to state-owned companies, which was to be auctioned and transferred to private hands.
