The construction of the first frigate for the Navy has started. The biggest contract in history
Three Miecznik frigates will be delivered to the Navy by 2032, the Ministry of National Defense has announced. The frigates will be built at PGZ Stocznia Wojenna under the largest contract ever awarded to the Polish shipbuilding industry.
— The three Miecznik frigates will be a significant reinforcement of the Polish Navy. (…) The Miecznik ships will increase the combat potential of the Polish Army, but will also constitute a significant contribution of Poland within NATO. They will allow for the implementation of a wide spectrum of activities at sea, including securing shipping routes and critical infrastructure – said the Minister of National Defense Mariusz Błaszczak during the ceremony of cutting sheets for the first vessel.
The first frigate is to be built by 2026.
Three modern Miecznik frigates for the Polish Navy will be built at PGZ Stocznia Wojenna in cooperation with the leaders of the defense industry (Babcock, MBDA, Thales, Remontowa Shipbuilding). It will be the largest ever contract awarded to the Polish shipbuilding industry.
The multi-purpose frigates will be equipped with modern radar, artillery and missile systems. Thanks to these ships, the Polish Navy will gain new opportunities to perform a wide range of tasks in Polish maritime areas and participate in missions and exercises organized with NATO allies.
About 2,000 jobs will be created during the project. jobs in shipyards, defense companies and other industry sectors directly involved in the project.
The PGZ-MIECZNIK Consortium composed of: Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa and PGZ Stocznia Wojenna is responsible for the implementation of the project. Strategic partners in the project are: Remontowa Shipbuilding, Babcock, Thales UK and MBDA UK.
