Six years and that's it. Novak Djokovic's loud breakup
The first months of the current season are not successful for Novak Djokovic, and now the Serb has announced important news. He will no longer work with Goran Ivanisevic.
Novak Djokovic is still the leader of the ATP rankings, although this season is not entirely going as he planned. The Serb was a huge favorite to win the Australian Open Grand Slam, but was eliminated in the semi-finals after losing to Jannik Sinner. He also did not triumph in Indian Wells, and in Miami he decided not to start. Now he has announced that Goran Ivanisevic is no longer his coach.
Djokovic breaks up with Ivanisievic after six years
Both men started cooperation in 2018 and it resulted in great successes. Djokovic has gained a lot because many people consider him the best tennis player of all time. All because he has already collected 24 Grand Slam titles and has outperformed Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer in the classification. In total, he has collected 98 titles in the ATP and has been the leader of the ranking for over 400 weeks.
However, for some time now, there has been some tension in the relationship between Djokovic and his coach. On Wednesday, the Serb officially announced the end of cooperation. He did not reveal the specific reason, but thanked the coach for sharing the journey.
“Goran and I decided to end our cooperation a few days ago. Our on-court chemistry has had its ups and downs, but our friendship has always been solid. Sefinjo, thank you for everything my friend. I love you,” wrote the ATP ranking leader on Instagram.
What's next for Djokovic's career?
The tennis legend certainly made a brave decision to end cooperation with the outstanding coach. There has never been a situation in which Djokovic was overshadowed by much younger players. However, age cannot be fooled. This year the Serb will be 37 years old and it will be increasingly difficult for him to win the biggest tournaments. Now he probably dreams of preparing as best as possible for the clay competition, which will culminate in the Roland Garros Grand Slam, in which he will defend his title.
