Protect your PESEL against fraudsters. Important changes enter into force on June 1
From June 1, 2024, a significant change regarding the protection of the PESEL number will come into force in Poland. From that date, financial institutions will be obliged to check whether a given PESEL number is restricted before conducting any transactions.
Reservation of the PESEL number is possible from November 2023 using the mObywatel application or via the mobywatel.gov.pl portal. From June 1, all financial institutions will be obliged to comply with new, restrictive regulations regarding the PESEL number.
Why is it worth registering your PESEL number?
Thanks to the new regulations, people whose PESEL number has been reserved are protected against financial fraud. If, despite the PESEL reservation, someone takes out a loan using that person's data, the responsibility for repayment will not rest with the injured party, but with the institution that did not perform the verification.
Restricting your PESEL number allows you to protect yourself against financial fraud. When the PESEL number is withheld, financial institutions must check this status before conducting a transaction. If the restricted PESEL is used to take out a loan, the responsibility for repayment rests with the institution that did not verify it, not with the injured party.
How to reserve your PESEL number
PESEL registration can be easily performed through a few steps in the mObywatel application. You also have the option to withdraw this disclaimer at any time, permanently or for a specified period. These changes are intended to increase the security of your personal data and protect against identity theft.
The possibility of blocking the PESEL number was introduced in November 2023. Thanks to this, from then on you can protect your personal data against financial fraud by reserving your PESEL number via the mObywatel application or the mobywatel.gov.pl portal.
