On Thursday, August 31, Fernando Santos announced his call-up for the September training camp and, as usual, there were plenty of surprises.

Kamil Grosicki and Grzegorz Krychowiak return to the team after a long break, and Adrian Benedyczak is also included in the squad. During the press conference, Fernando Santos explained his reasons for appointing a specific group of players.

– My appointments are always made depending on what will happen in the next meetings. I have emphasized many times that the national team is open, there are no players who cannot be called up.

The Portuguese was asked whether there were any events that had the greatest impact on the appointment of Krychowiak and Grosicki, whether they were the latest results, the players’ form or perhaps a conversation with captain Robert Lewandowski.

– Certainly not a conversation with Lewandowski. Players are not responsible for call-ups, only the coach. Even the president couldn’t tell me who to choose. There is no place for such stories here. Nobody influences who I appoint and who I don’t, assured the coach.

A tough stance from the coach

And he emphasized it again. – And why do I choose certain players and not other ones? This results from my analysis of the matches already played and those to come, he continued.

– The Polish national team is not in such a place because we would prefer to be leading in the table, but we still only depend on ourselves. I would like to make this clear. We have five finals now and if we win four or five then we will qualify. This is our strategy and approach. The September appointments were based on this goal and what we need in the near future in terms of sports and non-sports, he concluded.
