Curiosity or kitsch? The facade of this building will be decorated with emojis

It had to end like this. Emojis will appear on the facade of a building to be built in the Netherlands. The architect who came up with the idea for this solution decided that it is the most recognizable symbol of the 21st century.

Changiz Tehrani, an architect who is responsible for the design of a newly built apartment building in the Dutch city of Amersfoort, said that he wanted his building to stand out with something and at the same time reflect the times in which it was built. Following the example of sculptures or gargoyles placed on the facades of buildings from historical eras, the architect decided to commemorate 2019 by placing… 22 emojis on the facade of a new block of flats. Smileys, expressing emotions that we know thanks to instant messaging, are, in his opinion, the best symbol of the 21st century.

The graphic symbols will be copies of those that WhatsApp users may use on a daily basis. Changiz Tehrani from Attika Architekten wanted to avoid creating another boring building.

There’s a fine line

Some architects, however, think this is a very bad idea. They claim that architecture is creating something that lasts for years and that you must take full responsibility for your works.

– If everything is a joke and we judge it solely by whether we like it at the moment, then I think that is a very dangerous approach. – says one of the architects.
