The Tatra Mountains seen from a distance of 240 km

“Visibility of the Tatra Mountains from this place is only possible with increased atmospheric refraction. Under standard conditions, the forests of the Sandomierska Valley completely cover the Tatra peaks,” it was written in the photo description. It shows peaks at a maximum distance of 241.1 km from the observation point. The photo also shows mountains from a distance of 240.9 km and 239.7 km. They were made exactly on January 30, 2024, and their author is Paweł Kłak.

The Tatra peaks were captured after sunset from the hill on which the observer was standing. It was 311 m above sea level

This is a point in the town of Godziszów Młodych, near the roadside Cross “Witness of Faith”. “In order to take a photo of the Tatra Mountains from Godziszów, it was necessary to select appropriate observation places. (…) The obstacle is the vast forests of the Sandomierska Valley,” the description added.

What favored the photographer was the forecast optimistic weather. However, she also changed while waiting for the unusual sight.

Other visibility records in the Tatra Mountains

The first confirmed observations of the Tatra Mountains from a distance of 200 km can be found in works written in the 19th century. “Photography of the Tatra Mountains from the Holy Cross taken by Dr. Ryszard Kapuściński on January 21, 1987 is the oldest photo-confirmed observation from a distance of 200 km. For the next 30 years, it was not possible to capture a view of the Tatra Mountains further than from the Świętokrzyskie Mountains,” write the creators of dalekichwidokow.pl.

In 2018, the first photograph of the Tatra Mountains was taken from the Lublin Upland, located 229.4 km from Gerlach. In turn, in the years 2021-2023, the record distance was exceeded several times. They were seen from 232 km, 233 and even 236 km.
