There was a huge sensation in the first round of the ATP tournament in Tokyo. Alexander Zverev was eliminated against a much lower ranked opponent, Jordan Thompson. The German was considered Hubert Hurkacz’s main rival in the Japanese competition.
Hubert Hurkacz has no respite. On Sunday, October 15, the Pole achieved great success by winning the ATP 1000 Masters tournament in Shanghai, where in the final he defeated the Russian Andrei Rublev 6:3, 3:6, 7:6(8), twice overcoming great difficulties. On Wednesday, October 18, the Wroclaw native will go to Tokyo, where he will face the recently defeated Zhinzhen Zhang. It is already known that his most serious opponent was eliminated from the Japan Open.
Alexander Zverev was eliminated from the ATP tournament in Tokyo
The German tennis player was a clear favorite in the match against the Australian, who is only ranked 60th in the ATP ranking. The beginning of the match reflected this thesis, as Alexander Zverev led to three break points, but was unable to convert any of them. Jordan Thompson was the first to take advantage of such an opportunity in the fourth game and led to 3-1, not giving up the lead until the very end of the set, which he won 6-3.
In the second, the German quickly took a 2-0 lead, but he did not enjoy it for long, because in the next game the Australian responded with a break. Everything was heading towards overtime, but to the surprise of many fans, the ninth racket of the ATP ranking lost the next serve, which meant the opponent’s advantage. Thus, the set ended with the score 6:4 and Zverev was sensationally eliminated in the first round of the ATP tournament in Tokyo. Immediately after the match, he was very critical of his game.
– I played badly. Jordan played and served very well, but for me it was a very bad match. I don’t know what more I can add, said Alexander Zverev. Hubert Hurkacz’s meeting with Zhinzhen Zhang is scheduled for 3:00 a.m. Polish time.
