Why did a great talent leave the Ekstraklasa? The leader’s director admitted it directly
This is one of the most famous transfer moves in the winter window in the Polish league. Did the great talent Karol Borys really have to leave Śląsk Wrocław?
On Thursday (i.e. February 1), it was announced that the club’s great talent, Karol Borys, had been sold. The Polish youth representative was sold to KVC Westerlo. According to Slasknet.com, the Belgians are to pay Śląsk approximately EUR 2 million for the petite midfielder. This is quite a good price for a 17-year-old footballer.

However, the decision of the PKO BP Ekstraklasa leader was met with criticism. Fans of the Wrocław team were saddened by the news that Borys, who has been with the club for years, considered a great talent of at least European caliber, is finally leaving Wrocław. Even more so after seeing the offensive midfielder’s performances during important events in which the Polish youth national team took part.
The reasons for this move were widely commented on on TVP Sport by the sports director of the leader of PKO BP Ekstraklasa, David Balda. One of the arguments “for”? Club budget needs.
– You have to look at Karol’s numbers in the reserves – he is a great player, but he has no numbers and today you pay for numbers, not for playing. That’s why offensive players who are not visible on the pitch but score a goal or make an assist are valued at that level. The club also needs to develop. We cannot knock on the owner’s door and expect him to give money. We also have to make money because we have signed contracts with sponsors. We have no other way to make money in 1.5 years. More and more fans mean more and more security costs. The club’s revenues are not high and I believe they will not be for 1.5 years. I’m not saying that we have to sell, because the owner of Silesia gave us the guarantee that we don’t have to sell. If the club wants to build a base, biological regeneration, wants to invest in regeneration, we need money. Some of these funds from Karol’s transfer will be invested in the club (…) I understand that people will be dissatisfied, but what more do they want from me? Since my arrival, we have sold all players for over EUR 3.5 million. We also have interest on the amounts of future transfers, argues Balda.
Interesting transfer window for Śląsk Wrocław
Even before the winter window began, striker Patryk Klimala was signed. Then in order: Simeon Petrov (centre back), Lewuis Pena (winger), Mikołaj Tudruj (defender) and Alen Mustafić (centre midfielder). The latest signing is full-back Tommaso Guercio.
Cameron Borthwick-Jackson, Marcel Zylla and the above-mentioned Borys parted ways with Wrocław in the winter. Most likely, striker Kenneth Zohore and Szymon Lewkot will also be looking for a new place to play.
