They offer expensive shoes at low prices and then empty your bank account. Fraudsters are a threat again on Facebook
Another wave of scams has hit Facebook. This time, cybercriminals are trying to post fake offers to buy branded shoes at very low prices.
Despite the dynamically growing popularity of TikTok and Instagram, Facebook, with its 25 million users in Poland, is still the social media platform where it is easiest to get scammed, because there are simply the most frauds there and they are the most widespread.
Recently, a completely new wave of attempts to extort money has appeared on Facebook – this time there are false advertisements for offers that supposedly allow you to buy branded shoes at very attractive prices. So low that it should immediately raise suspicions, but unfortunately there are still people who fall for it.
Branded shoes on Facebook – these offers are a scam
When writing about suspiciously low prices, we mean situations such as when an advertisement for a “speaker for only PLN 9” was recently displayed on Facebook, suggesting that the Neonet chain of stores had discounted equipment worth PLN 1,700 to such a low amount.
Now we are dealing with a similar scam, but this time, at an absurdly low price, straight from the popular Zalando chain, you can allegedly buy branded New Balance footwear. Shoe models that normally cost PLN 300-400 are offered by fraudsters in false promotions for up to PLN 60. These types of advertisements should attract your attention because if you try to make such a purchase, not only will you not receive the ordered product, but you may also expose yourself to a number of dangers.
Experts warn against false advertising
The CSIRT KNF team warns about the fraud, which draws attention to the fact that cybercriminals impersonating Zalando are behind these advertisements. The advertisements lead to dangerous websites where fraudsters extort users’ personal data and payment card information. “Be safe online and don’t get robbed” – reads the appeal issued by CSIRT KNF.
Providing payment card details in a form linked to such an advertisement will probably result in the loss of funds on the bank account to which the card is linked. In the best case scenario, fraudsters will gain possession of the personal data of a careless person who, tempted by a “special” promotion, decided to click on suspicious links. The loss of personal data involves, for example, the risk that cybercriminals will use it to take out a loan or make another illegal transaction.
