The Tunisian wants to play in Grbic's squad. FIVB blocks changing nationality

In the current season, Sir Susa Vim Perugia is represented by Kamil Semeniuk and Wilfredo Leon. They were joined by Wassim Ben Tara from PSG Stal Nysa. The Tunisian has Polish citizenship and wants to play volleyball under the white and red flag. The FIVB does not agree to this, blocking the change of sports nationality.

In the current Serie A season, we do not have the opportunity to watch many Poles. The colors of Sir Susa Vim Perugia are represented by Wilfredo Leon and Kamil Semeniuk. Both players had already played against each other last year. After a disgraceful season for the team that did not advance to any European cup, they want to erase the stain and win the Serie A championship.

A Perugia player cannot change his nationality for the FIVB

Before the season, Perugia strengthened itself on the transfer market. Wassim Ben Tara joined the club. The Tunisian was the star of PlusLiga. In the colors of PSG Stal Nysa, he became the most effective player of the 2022/2023 season. Great form resulted in a transfer to the Italian Peninsula.

The player with Polish roots was until recently a player of the Turkish national team. After obtaining a Polish passport, he also wanted to change his volleyball nationality to be listed in the FIVB system as a Pole. This was supposed to be an advantage in a possible involvement in the PlusLiga, where there is a limit on foreign players. As Ben Tara said in an interview with TVP Sport, the world federation blocks him from changing, without providing any arguments. The 27-year-old, born in Tunis, declared the fight via appeal.

– I have a Polish passport from my Polish mother, but now I call it a “sports” one. Three days ago I received a message that my application was not accepted. Interestingly, I didn’t get any arguments from the FIVB and that’s strange to me. Together with my manager and lawyer, we will definitely file an appeal soon. We have to prepare everything again and I believe that this time it will definitely be fine, said Ben Tara, who declared that if the decision changes positively, he is ready to play in Nikola Grbic’s team.

Wassim Ben Tara’s career

Ben Tara played for Tunisian and French clubs for years. In 2020, he moved to Nysa, where he played for three years. This season, he enjoyed winning the Italian Super Cup.
