The Russian Foreign Ministry summoned the Armenian ambassador. All because of "a series of unfriendly steps"

The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Armenian ambassador. The reason was, among others, “offensive statement” about Maria Zakharova’s spokeswoman, military exercises from the US, or the visit of the prime minister’s wife to Kiev.

The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement on the situation in Armenia. “Recently, we have noted the emergence of certain doubts in official circles and political elites of the Republic of Armenia regarding the advisability of allied ties within the Collective Security Treaty Organization and with Russia on a bilateral basis, as well as regarding the feasibility of a set of tripartite agreements between Moscow, Yerevan and Baku on the ways normalization of Armenia-Azerbaijan relations,” it began.

The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs explained that Armenia’s leaders have recently taken a number of unfriendly steps. It’s about, among others about the commencement of ratification of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, the trip of the wife of the Armenian Prime Minister to Kiev to provide humanitarian aid to Ukraine and the conduct of military exercises on the territory of Armenia with the participation of the US.

Therefore, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Armenian ambassador in Moscow, Vagarshak Harutunyan, and a “strong protest” was lodged with him. A protest note was also sent, pointing out the inadmissibility of offensive statements by the Chairman of the National Assembly of Armenia, Alen Simonyan, addressed to the spokeswoman of Russian diplomacy, Maria Zakharova, and the entire ministry.

The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs also expressed concern about the detention of blogger Mikael Badalyan and Radio Sputnik columnist Ashot Gevorkyan in Armenia. “At the same time, Moscow is deeply convinced that Russia and Armenia remain allies and all agreements on the development and strengthening of partnership relations will be fully implemented for the benefit of the peoples of both countries,” it concluded.
