The former Prime Minister of the Netherlands underwent euthanasia. "He died arm in arm with his beloved wife"

Dries van Agt and his wife – Eugenie van Agt-Krekelberg – underwent euthanasia. This was reported by The Rights Forum.

According to the American station ABC News, they both died on February 5 at the age of 93. The former prime minister – in the years 1977-1982 – and his wife were buried in Nijmegen (in the east of the Netherlands).

In 2019, he suffered a cerebral hemorrhage

“He died arm in arm with his beloved wife,” said the human rights organization (involved, among others, in matters relating to Palestine and Israel), whose president was the former Prime Minister of the Netherlands, on February 9. The statement added that Eugenie van Agt-Krekelberg was his great “support” throughout his life. Their relationship lasted for 70 years, with Dries van Agt constantly “calling her ‘his girlfriend’.”

ABC News describes that recently the health condition of the deceased was not the best. A particularly dangerous moment occurred when the former prime minister suffered a brain hemorrhage in 2019. He was at a ceremony commemorating the Palestinians at the time. The incident occurred while he was giving a speech.

Rutte: He gave color and substance to Dutch politics

The editors of the American portal associated with the station explain that since then the politician has never fully regained his strength. Previously, before this incident, van Agt was a keen cyclist, but after a stroke he had to give up his passion. For many years, van Agt was associated with the right-wing Liberal Party, Christian Democratic Appeal. In the long-running Israeli-Palestinian conflict, he began to vocally support Palestine 25 years ago.

The couple had three children. Many people on social media – especially from the world of politics – said goodbye to the former prime minister. In the statement, among others: current Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte wrote that “with his flowery and unique language, clear beliefs and striking presentation, Dries van Agt gave color and substance to Dutch politics in a time of polarization and party renewal,” we read.
