Serbia overboard the United Cup. In the quarterfinals, the team, whose biggest star is Novak Djokovic, lost to the Australian team. The 36-year-old himself unexpectedly lost to Alex de Minaur.
Novak Djokovic has been accustoming us to winning his matches on the antipodes for many years. The leader of the ATP ranking liked to win the Australian Open and nothing changed during the United Cup tournament. In the group stage, he defeated Zhizhen Zang and Jiri Lehecka. Serbia, on the other hand, won Group E, defeating both China and the Czech Republic with a score of 2-1. In the quarterfinals, the Serbs had to face Australia.
A sensational defeat for Djokovic
After just two matches, the match between Serbia and Australia was decided. Novak Djokovic and Alex de Minaur were the first to take the court. The ATP ranking leader lost this match 4:6, 4:6. This ended his streak of 43 consecutive victories in the antipodes. The last time Djokovic lost at this venue was in 2018.
Alex de Minaur, on the other hand, took revenge on the living tennis legend for the defeat he suffered in January last year at the Australian Open, when “Nole” defeated him in three sets. Djokovic’s loss at the very beginning greatly complicated the situation of the Serbs in the quarterfinals against Australia. Soon after, it was obvious that the United Cup hosts would advance to the semi-finals of the competition.
Alja Tomljanović, in turn, confidently defeated Natalija Stevanović 6:1, 6:1. This meant that after two matches, Australia are confident of entering the top four, as there is only a mixed doubles match left to play.
Poland can only face Australia in the final
Let us remind you that in addition to Australia, the Polish national team has already entered the United Cup semi-final. Both teams can only play each other in the final. In the semi-final, our team will play against the winner of the France-Norway quarter-final. Australia will face someone from the Greece/Germany pair.
The final phase will be played in Sydney. The semi-finals will take place on Saturday, January 6, and the final match the day after.
