Eggs are one of the basic products of our diet, they contain a wealth of nutrients. They are an ingredient that goes well with many dishes and for some people a mandatory element of breakfast. Although eggs contain substances necessary for the proper functioning of the body (apart from vitamin C and fiber), there is a belief that they can raise cholesterol. Is this really happening?

Head of the Department of Nutrition and Metabolomics, prof. Ph.D. n. med. Ewa Stachowska, in the material she published on Instagram, explained whether by eating eggs we actually increase our cholesterol. “Remember that cholesterol in our blood is the result of two things, namely what we eat, for example in eggs, which are very rich in cholesterol, and what we produce ourselves in the liver, kidneys and other organs,” she began. specialist. She also referred to the impact of eaten eggs on the production of cholesterol in our body:

“Sometimes, when we eat such high-cholesterol products, our cholesterol level actually increases quickly, but most often these two things have nothing to do with each other. I.e. our endogenous production does not pay any attention to how many eggs we eat,” says Professor Stachowska.

The specialist also mentions that everyone should use common sense and points out that people who have such genetic “beauty” that the cholesterol from eggs does not increase their blood levels – can safely eat eggs. However, he warns those whose lipids skyrocket after eating this product to “rethink the matter.”

What raises cholesterol in our body?

Professor Ewa Stachowska also noticed that eggs are also an element of the healthiest diet recommended for the prevention of atherosclerosis, i.e. the Mediterranean diet – of course they should be eaten in moderate amounts. She added that someone who has cholesterol problems should use common sense and eat 4 to 7 pieces a week.

However, she drew attention to a completely different product that may have a harmful effect on cholesterol levels: “What actually affects our circulatory system, arteries, and actually increases the process of atherosclerosis, is red meat, especially processed red meat. Red meat is extremely pro-inflammatory due not to the cholesterol contained in it, but to saturated fats in combination with iron.

“Remember that eggs are an extremely valuable source of fat, but also various ingredients that are necessary for our health. But let's eat them in moderation, and if our cholesterol has skyrocketed – let's pay attention to red meat, cold cuts, but also eggs. If we eat 7-8 eggs a day, it will obviously not be good for our health and the health of our arteries,” the specialist concluded.

Eggs are very nutritious and healthy. First of all, they are a source of high-quality protein that is easily absorbed by our body.
