Apple intentionally slowed down iPhones. Now he will pay a fine of up to USD 500 million

Apple must pay $25 to any iPhone user who had their iPhone slowed down without their knowledge. In total, the company may lose up to $500 million.

Apple deliberately slowed down iPhones to force customers to buy newer models. Now the company has reached a settlement under which it is forced to pay each user $25 in compensation. According to preliminary calculations by the court in San Jose, California, it may cost the company from $310 to as much as $500 million.

2 years of trial

The process during which the Cupertino company tried to mitigate the penalty lasted nearly two years. Apple admitted to unfair practices in December 2017. The slowdown was possible thanks to software solutions that negatively affected the operation of older devices. Users and analysts proved that subsequent program updates resulted in a gradual slowdown of the operation of models from several years ago.

Many people suggested that in this way Apple is trying to force users to buy newer models and thus increase sales. Apple, while admitting to such practices, said that the goal was to protect lithium-ion batteries in older models from excessive discharge.
