A warm winter is not good for nature. The bees are confused. They wake up from their lethargy
A warm winter means not only the lack of snow on Christmas and the inability to build a snowman, but also a big problem for nature. In December, the trees started budding, the strawberries are blooming… and the bees are flying out in search of food.
8 degrees Celsius at the end of December is a very undesirable phenomenon from the point of view of nature. It’s not just that there is no snow on Christmas and children can’t build snowmen. The main problem is that the trees started budding many months too early. In December, strawberries also bloomed, and bees stopped gathering in the so-called clusters.
They may die out
Bees can survive the winter by creating so-called clumps. They gather around the queen bee on several center frames. This allows them to maintain a temperature that ensures their survival throughout the winter. They can survive for several months this way. This condition resembles the behavior of penguins, which gather in groups to shield themselves from the wind and protect themselves from hypothermia.
However, the temperatures this winter are too high. Some bee colonies think that it is already spring and are starting to be active. According to experts, this may be very unfavorable for bees and their brood, which will not survive a possible sudden attack of frost. Awakening from torpor also causes adults to consume more honey stored for the winter. This may mean that in the event of frost, they will not have enough food to survive the winter.
