Real Madrid provided sad news. Miguel Angel Gonzalez, the team’s legendary goalkeeper, has died at the age of 76.

Miguel Angel is a piece of Real Madrid history. During the eighteen seasons in which he wore the Real Madrid shirt, from 1968 to 1986, he won two UEFA Cups, eight Spanish league titles, 5 Copa del Rey and 1 Spanish league cup. He has practically always been a strong point of the team, which is why Real emphasizes his contributions to the team so much.

Miguel Angel was the representative of Spain

The outstanding goalkeeper played for the Spanish national team 18 times and was a member of the team at two world championships – in Argentina (1978) and Spain (1982). In the first case, he was the main goalkeeper, and in the second time, he served as a substitute. It was in 1982 that he said goodbye to the national colors. He made his debut in the national team seven years earlier.

Miguel Angel has been associated with Real Madrid practically his entire life. In addition to 18 seasons as a player, he also performed various duties as a first team delegate and goalkeeping coach. He was always welcome at the club’s matches.

With the news of Miguel Angel’s death, Real Madrid’s website published wonderful words about the former footballer.

“Real Madrid, its president and board of directors deeply regret the death of Miguel Angel Gonzalez, one of the greatest goalkeepers in our history, a legend of Real Madrid and Spanish football,” reads the statement.

“Real Madrid would like to express its condolences and sympathy to his wife Maria del Pilar, his son Miguel Angel, his grandchildren Daniela and Mauro, his family, teammates and all his loved ones,” it added.

Miguel Angel passed away at the age of 76. Recently he has been struggling with a serious illness. Since 2022, he has suffered from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
