The Davis Cup match between the Polish national team and Barbados began on Friday in Kozerki, Masovia. Hubert Hurkacz was the first to appear on the court in the men’s tennis team. “Hubi” won relatively easily.
Hubert Hurkacz regularly, whenever the calendar opportunity arises, appears in national colors, supporting the White and Red team in the competitions. This time, Poles performing in the so-called World Group II face Barbados. On Friday (i.e. August 15), the Wrocław resident opened the Polish team’s competition with Barbados. Poles are clear favorites with the team of an island country located in Central America.
Hubert Hurkacz played for the Polish national team again
In Friday’s competition, “Hubi” faced Kaipo Marshall. He is only a 21-year-old player who has not yet had the opportunity to even be listed in the ATP ranking. Marshall is a player who has competed in ITF tournaments. It’s safe to say that it’s a level lower in terms of prestige and difficulty level than the ATP.
Hurkacz showed the difference between him and his opponent in the first set. The stressed Marshall was unable to engage in an equal fight with the Wroclaw native. Hurkacz won in just 17 minutes, winning the game 6-0. It was obvious that the current number 16 in the world ranking felt comfortable in front of the Polish audience. It is worth adding that for Hurkacz it is a return to the national team after a four-year break. After Friday’s match, the Pole’s record in the Davis Cup is nine wins and the same number of defeats.
However, the second set was unexpectedly even. Hurkacz was already leading 4:1, but Marshall took up the challenge and managed to equalize the score to 4:4. Even the breakthrough of the Wrocław player seemed surprising, coming from a tennis player from a completely different, much lower level. However, tennis is a game in which you cannot lose concentration even for a moment.
The young White and Red team in the Davis Cup
Ultimately, Hurkacz won the second and last, as it turned out, game 7:5. This is the first point for the Poles. On Friday, Olaf Pieczkowski will play against Darian King.
A doubles match is planned for Saturday: Karol Drzewiecki / Jan Zieliński – Darian King / Haydn Lewis at 11:00. After this fight, Hurkacz may start for the fourth time, this time against King. If there is no result (play until the team wins three points), Pieczkowski will play against Marshall in the fifth decisive clash – also on Saturday.
