Will Hubert Hurkacz play in the ATP Finals? He still has a chance to take part in the tournament
Hubert Hurkacz won the ATP 1000 tournament for the second time in his career. He also won the ATP tournament for the second time this season. Although overall the Pole cannot consider this season a success, at the end of the competition he may still qualify for the ATP Finals.
Hubert Hurkacz cannot consider the 2023 season to be an extremely successful one. Over the months, the Pole dropped in the ATP rankings, and difficult draws in the most important tournaments of the season did not help him gain points. Unexpectedly for the white and red fans, “Hubi” showed his fantastic side during the ATP Masters 1000 in Shanghai. The Pole dismissed several rivals to defeat the much higher seeded Russian, Andrei Rublev, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 in the final after a three-set battle.
Hubert Hurkacz is still in the game for the ATP Finals
Hurkacz showed good form from the beginning of the tournament. Nevertheless, as usual, he kept the fans in suspense, playing long and even battles with many rivals. After defeating Sebastian Korda in two sets in the semi-final, it was obvious that the Pole was in great shape. Despite this, Rublev was also able to get out of trouble in the final, although his nervous behavior could sometimes throw him off balance.
For Hubert Hurkacz, this is the second triumph in the ATP 1000 tournament (the most prestigious in terms of points after the Grand Slams and ATP Finals) in his career. The previous triumph took place in Miami in 2021. Moreover, after winning the ATP 250 competition in Marseille, Hurkacz recorded his second win this year. Despite the average middle of the 2023 season, “Hubi” is still in the fight for appearances in the ATP Finals.
The win in Shanghai gave him many points in the ranking. In the latest ranking on Monday, he will be in 11th place in the ranking (before the tournament he was 16th). Until Casper Ruud’s eighth place, he will be only 335 points behind. It is worth mentioning that Hurkacz will take part in three ATP tournaments before the finals. He will fight in Tokyo, Basel and Paris. Apart from him, only three other tennis players from the top fifteen decided to take part in three tournaments.
Hubert Hurkacz is fighting for a better position in the ATP ranking
In total, Hurkacz can score up to 2,000 points, but this is an extremely optimistic variant. The ATP Finals will take place on November 12-19 in Turin.
