Every young German born in early 2008 will soon be summoned before a military medical commission. This is related to the reform that has come into force. It is the result of an agreement between the Christian Democratic Union and the Social Democratic Party of Germany.

Politicians of the center-left and center-right have reached an agreement on the reform of conscription into the German army. The document assumes an increase in its numbers from 182,000 to 270,000 soldiers. As for reservists, there are supposed to be 200,000 of them.

The case is covered in detail by local media. The daily “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung” emphasizes that the government’s priority is to “obtain as many volunteers as possible to serve the homeland.” “Politicians from the CDU and SPD have agreed that the new military service will include universal medical examinations and set goals for increasing the number of troops. From 2026, all men born after January 1, 2008 will be subject to universal medical examinations,” reports “FAZ”.

As we reported in mid-October this year, the new solutions are intended to respond to Germany’s growing defense needs and obligations to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

What changes regarding the collection procedure? Each young man will soon receive a special questionnaire in which he will declare his readiness to serve. Priority will be given to volunteers. If it turns out that their number is too low, the remaining candidates will be selected by lot.

Those selected in this way will then undergo thorough medical examinations and take part in job interviews. Then they will be sent to serve in the Bundeswehr for at least six months. The change in regulations is intended to increase the efficiency of recruitment and reduce administrative costs that have so far been generated by mass pre-conscript examinations.

The questionnaires must be completed by men only. However, there is nothing stopping women from volunteering to serve.
