You will think this is Italy and you will be surprised. This lake was a hit during the Polish People’s Republic
While some lakes are drying up, others are thriving and bringing back memories of times gone by. This is the case in the south of the country.
If you are looking for inspiration for a weekend trip, you are a resident of Małopolska and you are tired of the most popular places, remember about Lake Dobczyce located between Myślenice and Dobczyce. It dates back to 1986 and is still doing great today. Interestingly, it serves as the main reservoir of drinking water for Krakow.
Lake Dobczyckie was a hit from the Polish People’s Republic
Lake Dobczyckie has existed for 40 years and was created artificially as a dam reservoir – the dam is 30 meters high and 617 meters long. The decision to build it was made in 1970 to protect the city against floods caused by the overflows of the nearby Raba River. They also wanted to create a drinking water intake. The area of the reservoir is approximately 10.7 km² and it still serves the inhabitants.
The best places to relax on the lake are around the dam and the viewpoint. This allows you to admire the panorama of the lake. There are green glades along the shore, perfect for a picnic. Additionally, in the area, on the Raba River, there are places for water sports, including: kayaking.

Photos showing Lake Dobczyckie can be found, among others, on social media. Tourists and residents of the area regularly visit the place, especially in summer, when the weather is favorable for walking or sunbathing.
At first glance, the reservoir may be associated even with the Italian Garda, located between picturesque mountains and lush nature. In fact, you will find a completely different atmosphere there than abroad and you won’t even be able to swim in the water. Nevertheless, your eyes will be delighted.
It’s a great place for a walk or quiet relaxation. After visiting the lake, you can visit the town of Dobczyce, where the castle, the walls of the old town, the open-air museum and numerous restaurants are impressive. Other nearby towns located right by the water include: Kornatka, Brzezowa, Droginia and Osieczany.
Dobczyce can be found about 30 km from Krakow, so it’s worth remembering them if you visit the capital of Lesser Poland. Admission to the dam’s crown is free, but usually only available during designated hours.
