Do you like picking mushrooms, so are you patiently waiting for autumn? We have good news for you, you can go hunting now.

It is common knowledge that autumn is the season for mushroom picking. However, we know well that it is worth going to the forest to search in summer, and sometimes even in spring. The choice may not be so great then, but mushroom picking fanatics cannot in good conscience stay at home.

What mushrooms to collect in spring? First up are the morels

Most mushrooms like a combination of heat and humidity, so the beginning of spring is not the best time for them. In our climate, the most popular species will appear only in a few months. This does not mean, however, that we have nothing to look for in April and May.

Most experienced mushroom pickers know well that morels are among the first to appear in spring. You can already look out for their wavy and pointed hats. We are looking for yellow, gray and beige colors, most often for ash trees and fruit trees, but not only.

However, in April and May, looking for mushrooms involves some additional issues. Please remember that at this time of year some mushrooms are similar and you need to be careful. The most common edible mushrooms are the common morel, the morel morel and the morel morel. There are also common morels and thick-legged morels.

Please also remember that these mushrooms cannot be eaten raw. It is best to fry or stew them. Foxgloves and cichlids should be avoided. These morels are poisonous. Another thing to remember is the rule of collecting morels. They cannot be taken out of the forests because they are under protection. However, you can easily collect morels growing in parks, forest nurseries and gardens.

What other mushrooms can we find in April and May?

Among other species, it is worth paying attention to the spring caterpillars, sulphur’s yellow-tailed hawkers and scale-headed gadflies. This first mushroom appears already in April, although it is also known as spring may fungus. It has white or cream caps and is described as very tasty. The only problem may be the fact that it also tastes good to worms, so it is often badly damaged. It can also be confused with the very dangerous poisonous bluebell.

The sulfur gall, in turn, is sometimes called the “chicken of the forest.” It grows on tree trunks, so it is not difficult to find it. The best one to eat is, of course, when still young. The older the specimens, the harder the mushroom will be, also when heated. It gets its funny name from the fact that for some people it tastes like chicken.

Another fungus that we can look for in trees. It is a parasite of deciduous trees and its cap resembles scales. Here it is also better to collect young specimens.
