Wojciech Szczęsny saved! An amazing situation involving a Pole
FC Barcelona drew 3-3 with Club Brugge in the Champions League. Wojciech Szczęsny almost became the anti-hero of the match.
The loss of points by the Spanish champions in Belgium is still a result that few people could have expected. However, FC Barcelona had to make up for losses throughout the entire match. First with 0:1, then 1:2, and finally 2:3 to the disadvantage.
Champions League: FC Barcelona draw. Controversy involving Szczęsny!
Club Brugge took the lead once again, already in added time of the second half of the match. Romeo Vermant, in a one-on-one situation, grabbed the ball from under Wojciech Szczęsny and put the ball into the net.
However, as it turned out – after the referee’s intervention and VAR consultation – the goal was finally withdrawn, making it 4:3 for the hosts, and the Polish goalkeeper… could breathe a sigh of relief. However, it seems that the Pole was not fouled in this situation. English referee Anthony Taylor, after watching replays on the monitor and consulting with VAR referees, ruled the opposite.
Interestingly, Vermant and the other players of the Belgian club did not particularly protest, which also seems to be a telling signal. The situation was unclear and luck remained with the Polish goalkeeper. If Barcelona had not taken even a point from Belgium, the responsibility for the result would certainly have fallen on the Polish player.
As for the course of the match itself, it is certainly difficult to clearly assess the Spanish champions. On the one hand, there is huge offensive potential. Lamine Yamal himself could have scored a few goals, he scored one and assisted with… an own goal to make it 3:3. Additionally, it is worth noting the presence of Robert Lewandowski on the pitch. However, the captain of the Polish national team appeared on the pitch only in the second 45 minutes. Coach Hansi Flick allowed RL9 to come on in the 58th minute. A Pole’s performance? Rather without history.
As for Barca’s other side, one cannot remain indifferent to their terrible defensive performance. Coach Flick’s team clearly has a problem with this, as a team like Club Brugge was able to show. So – with all due respect to the Belgian team – rather a European average than a tycoon. The German coach will certainly have something to think about.
