Wojciech Szczęsny received disturbing news. It looks like it’s over!

Wojciech Szczęsny i Marc-Andre ter Stegen

Since October 2024, Wojciech Szczęsny has been the goalkeeper of FC Barcelona. However, it may turn out that the contract will not be fulfilled until the end of the 2026/27 season.

Let us remind you that Wojciech Szczęsny’s transfer to FC Barcelona is a story ready for a movie. First, the experienced Polish representative was treated by Juventus in an inelegant style. Szczęsny spent the years 2017-24 in Turin, but this was not a sufficient argument for the club’s authorities from the capital of Piedmont to part with the Polish goalkeeper in an appropriate manner.

Effect? Juventus lost Szczęsny, and the Pole himself made a very surprising decision, ending his professional career at the age of only 34. A few weeks earlier, the goalkeeper also said goodbye to the Polish national team during Euro 2024.

FC Barcelona say goodbye to Wojciech Szczęsny? Surprising news

However, it turned out that Szczęsny lasted only a few months in early retirement. FC Barcelona found itself in need, without a classy goalkeeper with experience in its ranks – after a serious injury suffered by the current number one, Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

It was decided that Szczęsny would be the ideal interim solution. The Pole was supposed to be a direct support for another goalkeeper, Inaki Pena. However, the Spaniard did not meet the expectations of coach Hansi Flick and his colleagues, and additionally made one – quite trivial, but still important – mistake – being late, which is frowned upon in the case of the German’s rule. Effect? Szczęsny got a serious chance, and the Pole’s sporting class is so high that he quickly took over the title of “number one” in the ranks of the legendary club.

Barcelona was so pleased with the Pole, who finished the 2024/25 season between the sticks of the Pride of Catalonia, that they extended his contract until the end of the 2026/27 campaign. Even Robert Lewandowski cannot afford such a luxury. Szczęsny has become a reserve goalkeeper this season, being an important piece of the puzzle in the development of the newly recruited number one – Joan Garcia.

The Spaniard actually stood between the posts, but he suffered an injury during the season, which allowed Szczęsny to show his capabilities again in a few games. Ultimately, they made 10 appearances, six in LaLiga and four in the Champions League.

However, it turns out that Barca has changed its approach towards the Pole’s future.

According to media reports in Spain, the search for a new goalkeeper who could replace the Pole is ongoing. Szczęsny himself mentioned in one of his interviews a few weeks ago that there are many indications that these are his last months in Barcelona.

It may therefore turn out that we are witnessing the last weeks of the era with Poles in the capital of Catalonia. There are fewer and fewer arguments in favor of Lewandowski staying in Barcelona. However, such is the fate of football.
