Winter on the Baltic Sea. PKP is preparing big changes
Most rail connections to the Baltic Sea appear in the summer season. Now the national carrier wants to change that.
To the Baltic Sea by train, not only during holidays? PKP announces a number of changes that will significantly facilitate travel to the Polish seaside, also in winter. According to Rynek Kolejowy, the carrier has just submitted applications to the Office of Rail Transport to launch new commercial connections to Hel, Łeba and Ustka. The plans include five more timetables – from December 2026 to December 2031.
From Krakow to Hel by train all year round
Seaside resorts are increasingly becoming the hit of winter holidays. The reason is not only the unique climate, but also lower prices with a very wide accommodation offer.
However, connections offered by PKP Intercity to the Baltic Sea are limited in winter. Many popular and crowded summer resorts fall out of the schedule. It turns out that it doesn’t have to be this way. The carrier’s plans include the inauguration of a year-round connection between Krakow and Hel. PKP hopes to soon be able to run as many as five pairs of trains a day, regardless of the season. Therefore, an application was submitted to UTK for the right to operate commercial connections, and the moment when winter journeys would begin would be December this year.
By train to Łeba and Ustka
Also seasonally, Poles will be able to count on a more comprehensive offer of the carrier. Next summer, PKP Intercity trains would run to Ustka from Kraków as many as three times a day. “In the understanding of PKP Intercity, the season means not only school holidays, but also April and May weekends, as well as the entire month of June and September,” reminds Rynek Kolejowy.
If UTK grants open access, the number of summer trains to Łeba (from Gliwice via Warsaw) will also increase. “Currently, PKP Intercity runs to Łeba during the season, but it does so as part of public service courses, not commercial driving,” we read.
