Williams make a sensational move as they sign an academy debutant
Williams Racing made a sensational move during the current F1 season. The club ended its cooperation with one of its drivers. They decided to choose a figure from the academy.
The Formula 1 season is in full swing. This Sunday, the world’s best drivers will take part in the Italian Grand Prix. However, just before the start of the event, a surprising change occurred in one of the teams.
Blow to F1 driver
Williams Racing has announced that it is prematurely ending its partnership with Logan Sargeant. In a press release, the team thanked the American for his “hard work and contribution over the past two seasons.” It also said that the driver will remain with the Williams family. “We will continue to support him as he continues his racing career,” it said.
Sargeant has had a tough time recently, crashing his car at the Dutch Grand Prix and finding out before that Williams had signed Carlos Sainz for the next season.
Williams Racing has decided to partner Alex Albon with academy driver and F2 racer Franco Colapinto for the remainder of the season.
Williams has chosen an academy player
The Argentine joined the Williams Racing Driver Academy at the start of 2023 and made his FP1 debut with the F1 team at this year’s British Grand Prix, making the 21-year-old the first driver from that country to compete in F1 in 23 years. “It’s an honour to make my Formula 1 debut with Williams – it’s what dreams are made of. The team has an incredible history and a mission to return to the top, which I can’t wait to get on board,” he said, as quoted by F1.com.
“I am ready for the challenge and I am fully focused on working as hard as I can with Alex and the team to be successful,” he concluded.
Williams team principal James Vowles commented on the decision. “Changing a driver mid-season is not a decision we take lightly, but we believe it gives Williams the best chance of challenging for points in the remainder of the season,” he said.
“We also believe in investing in our young drivers at the Williams Racing Driver Academy and Franco has a fantastic opportunity to show what he is capable of over the final nine rounds of the season,” he concluded.
