Wilfredo Leon was one of the brightest figures of the VNL tournament in Gliwice. The volleyball player returned to the Polish national team and immediately became its leader.
This is no surprise, considering the level of sportsmanship this volleyball player has been showing for years. Wilfredo Leon is a volleyball giant who plays at a high level both in club colors (Bogdanka LUK Lublin) and in representative duties. Let us add that the Polish volleyball player from Cuba has been officially playing for the Polish volleyball team since July 2019. As a representative of Cuba, Leon managed to reach, among others: for the silver medal of the World Championships (2010) and the bronze medal of the World League (2012), the predecessor of the Nations League.

Nikola Grbic, as he announced, implemented the plan to test various personal solutions in the context of the VNL 2026 tournament at the PreZero Arena in Gliwice. After playing two tie-breaks on Wednesday and Thursday, both winning, against the Belgians and Turks, the team was joined by, among others, at the weekend. exactly Leon.
The receiver showed solid form for his first appearances in the national team after the break and the preparatory period in Spała. On Sunday (June 28), the Poles played a killer match against Argentina. The first two installments were especially amazing.
In the opening set, a record-breaking set was played in the Nations League – ending with a score of 48:50 to the detriment of the hosts. The second installment? 26:24 for the Poles, and ultimately it ended with 3:1 for Poland.
– What a hot weekend it was in Gliwice. Hot not only because of the temperature, but also because of the level of emotions on the pitch! It was great to be back on the court and have the full house cheering. After playing like I did in the first two sets of the match against Argentina, I will be sitting in a tub of icy water for two days – Leon admitted on social media, acknowledging the events in Gliwice with a smile.
Leon himself scored a total of 28 points. While he had big problems in the reception area (27 attempts and only 15 percent positive), in the offensive, together with Bartłomiej Bołądź, he kept the Poles afloat. Leon attacked as many as 37 times, with an effectiveness of 62%. In addition, the volleyball player had three point blocks and two service aces.
Nations League: Where and when will the Polish national team play its next matches?
The last intercontinental tournament in which Poles will take part will be the competition in Chicago (July 15-19).
Who will the Polish national team play against at the tournament in an exceptionally “Polish” city on the map of the United States? The set of teams promises to be very interesting indeed. Poland will start playing in the USA with a match against the world runners-up, Bulgarians (July 15, Wednesday, 7:00 p.m.). Then… two matches in one day (18/07, Saturday), first the competition against Brazil at 3:00, and then against the Olympic champions, the French, from 23:00. For dessert, a clash with the hosts, USA – July 20 (Monday), again at 3:00. This match will also end the competition of Polish volleyball players in the intercontinental part of VNL 2026.
The Nations League finals will be held in Ningbo, China (July 30 – August 2).
