To receive a widow’s pension you must meet the following conditions:

  • complete the general retirement age, which is 60 for women and 65 for men,

  • remain in the marital community until the death of the spouse,

  • acquire the right to a survivor’s pension after the deceased spouse no earlier than before reaching the age of 55 (women) and 60 years (men),

  • the sum of combined benefits cannot exceed three times the minimum pension, currently it is PLN 5,636.73 gross.

Will there be changes?

Many people have reservations about the above-mentioned criteria. A petition has appeared on the president’s desk regarding changes to the rules for granting benefits. The author of the petition, a single mother of five children, whose husband died at the age of 47, points out that the current age criterion deprives her of the right to the benefit despite meeting the other conditions. In her opinion, the regulation is “discriminatory” because it denies support to people whose spouses died “too early.”

The applicant appeals to President Karol Nawrocki for a legislative initiative abolishing or modifying the age criterion. The change would restore access to the benefit to people in a difficult financial situation after the loss of a spouse.
