WhatsApp banned in the House of US representatives. What is behind the decision?

The House of US representatives prohibits the use of WhatsApp on business phones. The application is considered a threat to privacy and information security.
The American Chamber of Representatives has introduced a ban on using WhatsApp on the company’s service devices – informs android.com.pl, citing the Reuters agency.
The decision was made after the analysis of the Cyber security office, which found the messenger to be too risky in terms of data protection and transparency. The main allegations against the META company, the owner of the application, relate to unclear storage standards and encryption of information sent by users.
“In the opinion of officials, the insufficient transparency of the META company in this area puts into question the security of communication conducted via WhatsApp,” writes the website.
Instead of WhatsApp – safer alternatives
In connection with the above, employees were recommended to use other communication tools considered to be safer. The recommended ones included Microsoft Teams, Wickr, Signal and Apple – IMessage and GuyMe.
As the website reminds, this is another case when the Congress limits access to popular applications. In 2022, similar actions were taken to Tiktok, also due to concerns about the protection of user data and potential risks related to privacy.

The finish strongly disagrees with the decision of the US authorities. The company emphasizes that WhatsApp uses advanced end-to-end encryption and provides a high level of privacy protection. In her opinion, the application is safer than some of the approved communication tools. For now, however, the chamber’s decision remains in force, and congress employees must give up using WhatsApp on official devices.
