What words about Wojciech Szczęsny. That’s how the Scottish football star called the Pole
The September training camp of the Polish national team is in a way exceptional. It does not include Wojciech Szczęsny, who ended his career. Andrew Robertson spoke beautifully about the goalkeeper.
Wojciech Szczęsny has been a mainstay of the Polish national team in recent years. We remember in particular his great performance against Sweden in the play-off for the 2022 World Cup and his performance at the World Cup itself. Mainly thanks to Szczęsny, the Polish national team advanced to the knockout phase of the World Championship after a 36-year break. Suffice it to say that in the group games Szczęsny saved two penalties.
Robertson speaks beautifully about Szczęsny
During the European Championships, Szczęsny suggested that he would no longer play for the Polish national team, and a few days ago he announced that he did not intend to continue his career in club competitions. His last team was Juventus. Now the outstanding goalkeeper wants to spend a lot of time with his family. He retired from professional football while in very good shape.
The Polish national team now faces the opening of the Nations League, where the white and reds will face Scotland away. Andrew Robertson, one of Scotland’s most important players, was asked about Szczęsny. The left-back spoke highly of the 34-year-old.
“He had a fantastic career in Europe. He did amazing things. I wish him all the best in his retirement. Anyway, when you think your time is coming to an end, that you want to spend some more time with your family or go out and experience different things, that’s the time. If you don’t have the love for football anymore or you don’t like it, then it’s probably time to let it go. Of course I wish him luck. I’m sure he’s a legend of Polish football,” Andrew Robertson emphasized at Wednesday’s press conference.
The Polish national team in a new situation
After Szczęsny’s departure, there are several candidates to wear the number one jersey in the Polish national team. It seems that for now it will belong to Łukasz Skorupski. The Bologna goalkeeper has already been given a chance at Euro 2024, where he played brilliantly in the clash with France. Apart from him, Marcin Bułka and Bartłomiej Drągowski should count in the fight for the title of number one in the goal.
Poland will play Scotland on Thursday. The match will start at 20:45. Three days later, Michał Probierz’s team will face Croatia away.
