Jastrzębski Węgiel, Aluron CMC Warta Zawiercie and Projekt Warszawa – in the Champions League and DevelopRes Rzeszów and BKS BOSTIK ZGO Bielsko-Biała – in the Champions League. These Polish volleyball clubs have just met their group competition.
The draw took place at noon on Tuesday (July 16). The first Polish team drawn was the women’s volleyball team of Groty Budowlani Łódź. The Łódź team must first cope with two rounds of the Champions League qualifiers to get to the group stage of the competition. The team’s rivals from Tauron Liga will be Montenegrin OK Herceg Novi.

Looking at the seedings, the first, strongest basket for the men included Jastrzębski Węgiel and Aluron CMC Warta Zawiercie. The second basket included the bronze medalist of the PlusLiga 2023/24 season, Projekt Warszawa. In the case of the women, DevelopRes Rzeszów and BKS BOSTIK ZGO Bielsko-Biała landed in the second basket. The defending champions in the Champions League are the Italian Carraro Imoco Conegliano, with Joanna Wołosz in the line-up – and from this summer also Martyna Łukasik.
Interestingly, due to financial problems, the Polish champions, Chemik Police, withdrew from the Champions League.
How did the Polish women’s teams draw? DevelopRes Rzeszów ended up in Group A, where their rivals will be Carraro Imoco Conegliano, Bulgarian Maritsa Plovdiv and one of the winning teams in the qualifiers. BKS BOSTIK ZGO Bielsko-Biała ended up in Group E with Italian Savino Del Bene Scandicci, German champions Allianz MTV Stuttgart and also one of the winning teams in the qualifiers. Let’s add that Grot Budowlani cannot end up in a group with another Polish team, i.e. groups A and E.
Gentlemen? Jastrzębski Węgiel has been placed in Group E. The rivals will be: German SVG Luneburg, French Chaumont VB 52 and Bulgarian Levski Sofia.
Aluron CMC Warta Zawiercie will play in group C. The Polish vice-champions will play against the Italian Allianz Milano, the Belgian Knack Roeselare and the winning team from the qualifiers (no Polish representatives there).
Projekt Warszawa has been placed in group A. Its rivals will be the German Berlin Recycling Volleys, the Belgian Greenyard Maaseik and the Slovenian ACH Volley Ljubljana.
Champions League: Four “Polish” finals in a row for volleyball players
It is worth recalling that in recent editions of the most important European cup in men’s club play, Polish teams dominated. ZAKSA Kędzierzyn-Koźle won in 2021-23. What’s more, in 2023, the final play in the Champions League ended with a match for the title between two teams from the PlusLiga. ZAKSA beat Jastrzębski Węgiel 3-2 in the final match played in Turin.
In the 2024 edition, Jastrzębski Węgiel again played in the final. However, the Polish champions ultimately lost to Itas Trentino in the clash on Turkish soil.
